Paneer MakhaniFor our first Valentine’s Day together, Nevin decided to cook for me for the first time. He prepared an awesome 3 course meal, and the main dish was paneer makhani! Ever since then, this has become one of our staple recipes. We try to make this once a month or so, and we always make a large batch so we can enjoy it for a couple dinners and a lunch. His original recipe was out of this world and since then we have been working together to make it even better! Enjoy!

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 25 minutes


  • 3 tbsp oil
  • 3 cups fresh cubed paneer (we use two 12 oz packs- you can find this in any Indian grocery store)
  • 1/2 large onion (chopped)
  • 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 1/2 tbsp coriander powder
  • 2 tsp garam masala
  • <1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • >1/8 cup kasuri methi (fenugreek)
  • 1 cup skim milk
  • 1 tbsp dark brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups light cream (or 2 cups if you like more sauce)


In a pan over medium heat, heat up 2 tbsp of oil and fry the paneer until light golden brown.IMG_2164

When finished, transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.IMG_2165

Meanwhile, add 1 tbsp to the same pan and begin frying the onions until golden brown. Add the ginger garlic paste, mix well and fry for about 1 minute. Next, add the coriander powder, garam masala, chili powder, and salt. Fry for about 30 seconds until the masalas are all well combined.IMG_2166

Add the tomato paste, ketchup and kasuri methi. Add in milk and mix well. IMG_2167

Cook covered on low heat for about 5 minutes. Once done cooking, add back in the fried paneer.IMG_2168

Top this off with your cream, mix well and let simmer covered for about another 5 minutes.IMG_2169

Serve this dish warm over your favorite rice or with naan.
