Papdi chaat is a North Indian street food snack. Nevin loves this snack and one of my new lab mates recently returned from spending 7 months in India and personally requested we make this for her (HI MADDIE). It is made with papdi, a fried dough type of white flour wafer, plain yogurt, boiled potatoes and chickpeas, green chutney, tamarind chutney and chaat masala. This was my first time ever trying this snack and let me tell you- it was absolutely DELICIOUS- such a great combination of sweet and savory.

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 0 minutes (unless you need to boil potatoes then about 30 minutes) 

Ingredients:

For the green chutney

  • 1 1/2 cups fresh mint
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh cilantro (coriander)
  • 1 small hot green chili (chopped)
  • 1 1/2 tomatoes (chopped)
  • 1 small onion (chopped)
  • 1/2 inch fresh ginger (chopped)
  • 1 tsp chaat masala
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp coriander powder
  • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice
  • black salt and white salt to taste
  • water as needed

 For chaat papdi

  • chaat papdi or chaat puri (can find in Indian store)
  • plain lowfat yogurt
  • tamarind chutney
  • green chutney (as per above)
  • boiled chickpeas (I used GOYA canned chickpeas and they were great)
  • boiled, skinned potatoes (chopped)
  • chaat masala to top

Directions: 

For the green chutney

Place all ingredients in a blender. I only have a Magic Bullet, so I had to blend in increments to not overwhelm my smaller blender. If you have a full sized blender, you will be able to just blend all ingredients at once.

IMG_3033Blend until well combined using as much water as necessary to create a smooth paste. Transfer chutney into a serving bowl and refrigerate covered until ready to use.

Dip papdi in plain yogurt and place on a plate. Next add as much potatoes and chickpeas as you would like. Then, add the tamarind and green chutneys. Garnish with chaat masala. Serve on a plate with a spoon. Feel free to mix around to distribute the flavors evenly and ENJOY!
